My Valentine, Jesus

“I found the One I love. I held Him and would not let Him go.”
Song of Solomon 3:4
In my distress, I cried out to my God.
Encompassed by those set against me, their growling stomachs betray the belial behind their smiling eyes.
And so I
bolt.
Through the thick of the thicket I run. I race.
Whipped wild with lashes, the pale lines that
crisscross my face slowly reveal rows of red.
I seek out my love and my heart-
with trembling limbs
between trunks
beneath shadows
through leaves
kicked up by desperate feet
a growing, gasping cry is suddenly swallowed up by
open space.
...
Thinking to enlist help, I ask eyes nearby,
“Have you seen Him?”
But those hungry faces close in on me with no answer behind their lids,
save that of violence.
Too tired. Too dazed by anguish.
Instinct screams up all the fight and fire in my bones but yields no result. Logic glints briefly only to come up empty.
No recourse. No plan.
No hope but You.
When at that time, as seconds close in with the circle of cracked smiles-
I hear behind a wall and through the lattice, a voice as sturdy as stone, as sweet as spiced apple in summer.
“My beloved spoke, and said to me:
“Rise up, my love, my fair one,
And come away.
For lo, the winter is past,
The rain is over and gone.
The flowers appear on the earth;
The time of singing has come,
And the voice of the turtledove
Is heard in our land.
The fig tree puts forth her green figs,
And the vines with the tender grapes
Give a good smell.
Rise up, my love, my fair one,
And come away!
“O my dove, in the clefts of the rock,
In the secret places of the cliff,
Let me see your face,
Let me hear your voice;
For your voice is sweet,
And your face is lovely.”
Song of Solomon 2:10-14
“He sent from above, He took me;
He drew me out of many waters.
He delivered me because He delighted in me.”
Psalms 18:16, 19
And so, You steal me away to secret places within the rock of who You are.
The refuge of Your name is like that of none other. The sweetness of Your love is without compare; my heart longs for You alone. Who am I that You would call me fair? or consider my voice sweet, a pleasing aroma before you? Do you deal in this manner with every man under heaven?
“I found the One I love. I held Him and would not let Him go.”
Song of Solomon 3:4
I am safe.
