The Name

"And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus."
Luke 1:31
How He must have longed for this moment, to be called by that name most beloved; how He must have ached forward from the deep hollows of His heart to that heraldic instance. Surely how precious our Only One must cherish the moment like a garland enrapturing His glorious crown.
For from out of the boundless depths of eternity, and the countless titles ascribed, it is by that name, that name- His beloved would be saved.
It is by that name He would lay claim to His prized possession, His portion, what He was willing to lay it all down for. After eons of remaining encircled with in the shadow of a quiver, His loosing had finally come, and oh! how distressed He was to see it accomplished!
In that name, the countless cries of the helpless would hit His ear so sweetly, ever eager to oblige every last one. In that name He would hear the desperate weep for the salvation that He so desperately wept blood to provide.
What a treasured time it must be to Him, to mark the moment when generation upon generation would call upon that most precious and beautiful name; the moment when eternity stepped into time with punctuating power, ripping redemption ever outward from yesterday to forever.
Though a common name,
a humble name,
a name scoffed,
a name scorned,
a name crushed,
a name cursed
and hung on a tree
for you and for me.
But to Him,
to Him, it is a name worth
every wound,
every slight,
every sneer,
every venom-filled leer;
a name worth waiting for from eternity past, to at last reap His reward, to finally gather His recompense into His everlasting arms, and secure close to heart His long-awaited bride.
That name is the name that will be praised for ages upon ages,
to don the lips of thousands upon thousands and ten thousands times ten thousands; every tribe and tongue to send it roaring through the ascended masses at His feet.
That name to be endlessly lifted high with raised glasses, declaring glory and honor, bearing witness to His wonder, to His beauty, at the banquet feast of the Lamb.
That name,
most precious,
most beautiful,
most worthy,
most powerful,
most high,
above every name
that ever has been,
or ever could be;
oh! what a beautiful, beautiful name.
Indeed this must be one of those moments held so closely in the heart of our sweet Savior, the first time He was given that beautiful name–
Jesus.
"Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved."
Acts 4:12
"Behold, my Servant … many were astonished at you—
His appearance was so marred, beyond human semblance,
and His form beyond that of the children of mankind—
so shall he sprinkle many nations."
Isaiah 52:13-15
"And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled
Himself and became obedient to the point of death,
even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly
exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name,
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven,
should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."
Philippians 2:8-11
"The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes
around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying:
'Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty,
Who was and is and is to come!'
'You are worthy, O Lord,
To receive glory and honor and power;
For You created all things,
And by Your will they exist and were created.'"
Revelation 4:8,11
"Who has believed our report?
And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant,
And as a root out of dry ground.
He has no form or comeliness;
And when we see Him,
There is no beauty that we should desire Him.
He is despised and rejected by men,
A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.
And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him;
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
Surely He has borne our sicknesses
And carried our sorrows;
Yet we esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten by God, and afflicted.
But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray;
We have turned, every one, to his own way;
And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
He was oppressed and He was afflicted,
Yet He opened not His mouth;
He was led as a lamb to the slaughter,
And as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
So He opened not His mouth.
He was taken from prison and from judgment,
And who will declare His generation?
For He was cut off from the land of the living;
For the transgressions of My people He was stricken.
And they made His grave with the wicked—
But with the rich at His death,
Because He had done no violence,
Nor was any deceit in His mouth.
Yet it pleased the Lord to crush Him;
He has put Him to grief.
When You make His soul an offering for sin,
He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days,
And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand.
He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied.
By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall
justify many,
For He shall bear their iniquities.
Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the
great,
And He shall divide the spoil with the strong,
Because He poured out His soul unto death,
And He was numbered with the transgressors,
And He bore the sin of many,
And made intercession for the transgressors."
Isaiah 53
"And they sang a new song, saying:
'You are worthy to take the scroll,
And to open its seals;
For You were slain,
And have redeemed us to God by Your blood
Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation,
And have made us kings and priests to our
God;
And we shall reign on the earth.'
Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels
around the throne, the living creatures, and the elders;
and the number of them was ten thousand times ten
thousand, and thousands of thousands, saying with a
loud voice:
'Worthy is the Lamb who was slain
To receive power and riches and wisdom,
And strength and honor and glory and blessing!'
And every creature which is in heaven and on
the earth and under the earth and such as are in the
sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying:
'Blessing and honor and glory and power
Be to Him who sits on the throne,
And to the Lamb, forever and ever!'
Then the four living creatures said, 'Amen!' And
the twenty-four elders fell down and worshiped Him
who lives forever and ever."
Revelation 5:9-14
"After these things I looked, and behold, a great
multitude which no one could number, of all
nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before
the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white
robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying
out with a loud voice, saying, 'Salvation belongs to
our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!'
All the angels stood around the throne and the
elders and the four living creatures, and fell on their
faces before the throne and worshiped God,
saying:
'Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom,
Thanksgiving and honor and power and might,
Be to our God forever and ever. Amen.'
Then one of the elders answered, saying to me,
'Who are these arrayed in white robes, and where
did they come from?'
And I said to him, 'Sir, you know.'
So he said to me, 'These are the ones who come
out of the great tribulation, and washed their robes
and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.
Therefore they are before the throne of God, and
serve Him day and night in His temple. And He who sits
on the throne will dwell among them. They
shall neither hunger anymore nor thirst anymore;
the sun shall not strike them, nor any heat; for the
Lamb who is in the midst of the throne will
shepherd them and lead them to living fountains of
waters. And God will wipe away every tear from
their eyes.'"
Revelation 7:9-17
"Then the seventh angel sounded: And
there were loud voices in heaven, saying, 'The
kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of
our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign
forever and ever!' And the twenty-four elders
who sat before God on their thrones fell on their faces
and worshiped God, saying:
'We give You thanks, O Lord God Almighty,
The One who is and who was and who is to come,
Because You have taken Your great power and
reigned.
The nations were angry, and Your wrath has
come,
And the time of the dead, that they should be
judged,
And that You should reward Your servants the
prophets and the saints,
And those who fear Your name, small and great,
And should destroy those who destroy the earth.'
Then the temple of God was opened in heaven,
and the ark of His covenant was seen in His temple.
And there were lightnings, noises, thunderings, an
earthquake, and great hail."
Revelation 11:15-19
"So the
great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old,
called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole
world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels
were cast out with him.
Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven,
'Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our
God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the
accuser of our brethren, who accused them before
our God day and night, has been cast down. And
they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by
the word of their testimony, and they did not love
their lives to the death. Therefore rejoice, O
heavens, and you who dwell in them! Woe to the
inhabitants of the earth and the sea! For the devil has
come down to you, having great wrath, because he
knows that he has a short time.'"
Revelation 12:9-12
"Then I saw another angel flying in the midst of
heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach to
those who dwell on the earth—to every nation,
tribe, tongue, and people— saying with a loud voice,
'Fear God and give glory to Him, for the hour of His
judgment has come; and worship Him who made
heaven and earth, the sea and springs of water.'"
Revelation 14:6-7
"And I saw something like a sea of glass
mingled with fire, and those who have the victory over
the beast, over his image and over his mark and
over the number of his name, standing on the sea
of glass, having harps of God. They sing the
song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the
Lamb, saying:
'Great and marvelous are Your works,
Lord God Almighty!
Just and true are Your ways,
O King of the saints!
Who shall not fear You, O Lord, and glorify Your
name?
For You alone are holy.
For all nations shall come and worship before You,
For Your judgments have been manifested.'"
Revelation 15:2-4
"And the twenty-four elders and the four
living creatures fell down and worshiped God who sat
on the throne, saying, 'Amen! Alleluia!' Then a
voice came from the throne, saying, 'Praise our
God, all you His servants and those who fear Him,
both small and great!'
And I heard, as it were, the voice of a great
multitude, as the sound of many waters and as the
sound of mighty thunderings, saying, 'Alleluia! For
the Lord God Omnipotent reigns! Let us be glad and
rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the
Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready.'
And to her it was granted to be arrayed in fine
linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the
righteous acts of the saints.
Then he said to me, 'Write: "Blessed are those
who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb!"'
And he said to me, 'These are the true sayings of
God.'"
Revelation 19:4-9
"Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a
white horse. And He who sat on him was called
Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges
and makes war. His eyes were like a flame of fire,
and on His head were many crowns. He had a name
written that no one knew except Himself. He was
clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is
called The Word of God. And the armies in
heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean,
followed Him on white horses. Now out of His
mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike
the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a
rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the
fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And He
has on His robe and on His thigh a name written:
KING OF KINGS AND
LORD OF LORDS."
Revelation 19:11-16
"'And behold, I am coming quickly, and My
reward is with Me, to give to every one according
to his work. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the
Beginning and the End, the First and the Last.'
Blessed are those who do His commandments,
that they may have the right to the tree of life,
and may enter through the gates into the city. But
outside are dogs and sorcerers and sexually
immoral and murderers and idolaters, and whoever
loves and practices a lie.
'I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you
these things in the churches. I am the Root and the
Offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star.'
And the Spirit and the bride say, 'Come!' And
let him who hears say, 'Come!' And let him who
thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water
of life freely.
He who testifies to these things says, 'Surely I am
coming quickly.'
Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus!
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.
Amen."
Revelation 22:12-17,20-21
